Whom do I contact if I cannot get into a Pre-Professional or Professional Education course?
If a student cannot register for a Pre-Professional (except MTE 210) or Professional course, the student must place his or her name on the Enrollment Planning List. In order to be added into any course other than a Pre-Professional or Professional course at Oakland University a student must have the instructor’s written authorization (a signed add slip). If you are trying to reach an instructor for one of the Education courses, please contact the following departmental administrative assistant:

Should I meet with an adviser each semester?
Not necessarily. We do want to meet with you during your first semester so that we can create a program plan for you and begin your file. We strongly encourage you to know the requirements for your program listed in the catalog, on the website, and on your program plan – most students find they can navigate their way through the program using these resources. We are, however, happy to meet with you whenever you would like additional assistance in selecting courses or planning for your future. Ultimately, completing the program requirements is a student's responsibility.
If I am a transfer student, do I have to establish an Oakland University G.P.A before getting into Candidacy status?
No. Students who establish a 2.8 G.P.A. or above from their previous institution can be considered for Candidacy status. In addition to the required 2.8 G.P.A., completion of OU’s writing requirement (RHT 160), and a minimum passing score of 220 in each category of the MTTC Basic Skills Test.
Is it better to choose one major or one minor?
If you are interested in teaching at the middle school level, it is recommended that you pursue two endorsements (major or minor). Your major or minor concentration will become an endorsement on your teaching certificate only when you pass the MTTC subject area test.
When should the Basic Skills Test be taken? How many times a year is it offered? Is there a limit to the number of times a test can be taken? Are the results sent to OU?
The Basic Skills Test, which is offered 4 times a year, is required in order to obtain Candidacy Status. It is recommended students take the Basic Skills Test early during their sophomore year. There is no limit to the number of times the test can be taken. You can register for the test on the web at the following address: http://www.mttc.nesinc.com/. Despite indicating that your test results be sent to Oakland University, you must submit a photocopy to the Education Advising Office, 363 Pawley Hall, for your file.
When must the MTTC subject areas and elementary tests be taken?
Both your subject areas and Elementary tests must be taken and passed the semester before you student teach.
What clubs or organizations are available to education students?
The Student Michigan Education Association at Oakland University (SMEA-OU) is an organization open to all education students, both elementary and secondary. SMEA-OU hosts guest speakers on campus as well as professional conferences.
When I finish the Elementary Education program, what credentials will I have earned?
You will have earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and will be certified to teach all subjects K-5, all subjects K-8 in a self-contained classroom, and grades 6,7, and 8 in your major and minor (endorsed) areas of study.
What is the job outlook for teachers?
Employment opportunities in elementary education are growing. Teacher shortages are occurring nationwide. Students must understand, however, that certain Metropolitan Detroit tri-county area school districts are very competitive in their hiring practices. State budget reductions have made it challenging for many schools to offer jobs to new teachers. We encourage you to do your best to make your resume stand out above the rest – with excellent grades, experience working with children, and getting involved on campus and in the community.
Can I have my status changed pending my grades/G.P.A. for the current semester?
The Advising Office will change a student’s status only when Oakland University has officially posted grades/G.P.A. Letters from instructor’s/faculty confirming grades will not be accepted.
I will have more than 90 credits after the current semester, can I register for the next semester during early registration period?
Student’s class standing will be changed only after Oakland University has officially posted grades. During early registration, you will not have completed the semester so you will retain your previous status.
