English/Language Arts Education Program

Students interested in teaching English/Language Arts first need to choose whether they want to teach at the elementary or secondary level.  At the elementary level, students will be certified to teach all subjects in a self-contained classroom in grades kindergarten through fifth and English/Language Arts in grades six through eight.  At the secondary level, students are certified to teach English/Language Arts in grades six through twelve.  At both levels, students may choose to minor or major in English/Language Arts.

Within the elementary teacher certification program, the English/Language Arts (BX) endorsement requires a minimum of 24 credits (6 courses) for the minor and 36 credits (9 courses) for the major.  To confer the BX endorsement, students must also pass the MTTC Language Arts exam #090 .  A list of courses required for the BX endorsement can be found by clicking on “Major & Minor Course List” from http://www.oakland.edu/?id=3428&sid=45 .

Within the secondary teacher certification program, the English/Language Arts (BA) endorsement requires a minimum of 24 credits (6 courses) for the minor and 40 credits (10 courses) for the major.  To confer the BA endorsement, students must also pass the MTTC English exam #002.  A list of courses required for the BA endorsement can be found by clicking on “English Minor Program Plan” and “English Major Program Plan” from http://www.oakland.edu/?id=3422&sid=55
