What is HealthPro Start OU?


HealthPro Start OU is a unique program allowing students to complete a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences from Oakland University and then transition into the Doctorate of Pharmacy program at Wayne State University leading to a professional degree.

Acceptance to HealthPro Start OU guarantees you admission to the Doctor of Pharmacy program in the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Wayne State University as long as continuation criteria (detailed below) are met. This program is only open to incoming freshmen.

HealthPro Start OU trains innovators and critical thinkers, nurturing future leaders by treating students as part of the Pharmacy and Health Sciences community.

HealthPro Start OU minimum requirements

  • GPA of 3.50 (recalculated, including weighting for AP/honors classes)
  • Minimum ACT composite score of 25 
  • Explanation of experience (describe the amount of time devoted to the activity) in these areas:
o Health care
o Community service

o Team activities (for example, athletics, debate)
o Leadership
o High school extracurricular activities
o Employment
o Summer activities
  • Submission of a one-page typed essay describing why you are pursuing HealthPro Start and why you should be accepted.
  • Two letters of recommendation:
o One from a high school teacher, counselor or administrator who is familiar with your extracurricular activities, team and/or leadership skills; and
o One from a non family member who can address your health care experience, community service and/or employment

If you meet the minimum requirements and complete a separate HealthPro Start OU application, you will be invited to campus for a series of interviews with representatives from the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Wayne State University.

Continuing in HealthPro Start OU


HealthPro Start OU participants must:
  • Maintain a GPA at or above 3.3 during the first year in college.
  • Maintain an overall 3.5 GPA after the first year in college.
  • Maintain an overall 3.0 grade-point average in biology, chemistry, physics and math courses.
  • Complete the prerequisite course work for the desired program with a grade of "C" (2.0) or better. No repeated courses allowed.
  • Make regular progress towards the B.S. Degree in Health Sciences from OU.
  • COURSES MUST BE COMPLETED AT OU, NO TRANSFER COURSES ALLOWED.
  • Complete all academic and nonacademic entrance requirements of the Doctor of Pharmacy program (see http://pharmacy.wayne.edu or Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program http://www.pa.cphs.wayne.edu/admissions.php for the latest requirements)
  • Participate in the WSU/OU HealthPro Start Seminar and mentor process.
  • Demonstrate continuing activity in related volunteer work.
  • To be considered, the applicant must successfully complete the admission requirements and submit all of the appropriate applications.
How to Apply
Your application package must include (checklist):
o Admission to Oakland University by Feb 1st
o Completed HealthPro Start OU application
o Completed HealthPro Start OU Consent to release records form
o Submission of high school transcript
o Submission of ACT scores
o Indication of 3.5 grade-point average on the application
o Details of honors received in high school
o A one-page essay "Why Pursue HealthPro Start OU" and why you should be accepted
o Explanation of experience in areas listed in "minimum requirements"
o Letters of recommendation as listed in "minimum requirements"
