Application Information
This program is for individuals who wish to become a physical therapist.

The Essential Functions of Physical Therapy consists of physical, cognitive and behavioral abilities required for both successful completion of the program and the ability to practice safely once students graduate. Please read the attached document to view these essential functions. Click here

Application Process

Applicants apply in August – October of their last year of studies. Pre-requisite courses do not need to be completed before applying; if accepted, courses must be complete before beginning graduate coursework in the fall.

All applications must be submitted through the Physical Therapy Centralized Application Service (PTCAS). The application can be found at the PTCAS web site Click here

2012-2013 Application Cycle
Students are admitted during the fall semester only, 9 months prior to the start of graduate studies. The DPT program accepts between 32-35 students each year and the program begins in the fall.

Early Admission: The early admission deadline is August 15, 2012 for applicants who have decided that Oakland University is their first choice physical therapy program. Following the Physical Therapy Centralized Application (PTCAS) guidelines, a student may submit an early application to only one physical therapy program. All application materials must be submitted by this date.

Regular Admission: The regular application deadline for full consideration is October 15, 2012. Applications received after the October 15th deadline will not be reviewed by the Admissions Committee.

An application will be reviewed when all items are in the Physical Therapy Program offices at Oakland University. The items include:
  • PTCAS application
  • OU Graduate Admissions Online Application
  • Two recommendation letters
  • Official GRE scores (code 0650)
Transcripts do not need to be sent to Oakland University for the application process. In addition, there is neither a supplemental form nor a fee.

Early Decision applicants will be notified of their status by the end of September. All other applicants will be notified of their status by the beginning of February.

Clinical Education
During the course of the Program, student must complete four full-time clinical experiences. A general breakdown of these costs is listed below:

Insurance (Health) $520.00/semester
Professional attire/lab coat - Name tag $100.00/yr
Physical Examination and titres $150.00/yr
Yearly TB test $20.00 1 year
Hepatitis B Immunization $210.00 for all 3 shots
Criminal background check/fingerprinting $150.00/yr
* Car and Insurance (Student Dependent)
** Gas to clinicals @ $6.00/day
36 weeks x 5 days

*Students need to provide their own estimate of this expense as prices vary.
**If the student is placed at a site that requires long-distance travel and housing, extra costs must be budgeted.

Outcomes (3-year Averages)
  • 98% of admitted students graduate from program
  • 100% of graduates passed the National Physical Therapy licensure exam
  • 100% of respondents to survey are employed if they wished to be employed
Graduate Assistantships
A select number of Graduates Assistantships are available on a competitive basis for DPT students. Assistantships are open to students in their second to ninth semester in the DPT curriculum.

There are stipend programs and some scholarships available for students enrolled in the Program. Specific information is given to students at the time of orientation to the Program.

Tuition and Books
Estimated cost of tuition, fees, and textbooks for in-state students entering the DPT in 2012 is $75,042 for the three and one half year program. The estimated cost for out-of-state students is $129,675.
