Biography
Dr. McGlothlin is Program Director of Occupational Safety and Health at Oakland University and has been a manager, professional engineer, and educator for over 30 years. He received BS and MS degrees in Mining Engineering from West Virginia University and his Ph.D. in Education and Human Resource Studies at Colorado State University. He has also completed course work at the Harvard Business School, UCLA, and the University of Pennsylvania. In his professional career, Professor McGlothlin served as the corporate officer responsible for health, safety, and regulatory compliance for mining operations in three states. He has extensive industrial experience in safety program development, implementation, and management as well as in education and safety training of management and hourly workers in regulatory compliance and accident prevention. Professor McGlothlin has testified in administrative and civil courts as an expert witness in safety and health compliance and personal injury cases.
He has worked as a Registered Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania, Utah, and Colorado. Professor McGlothlin is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, Professional Member of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), American Institute of Mining Engineers, and has served on the ASSE Educational Standards Committee and the ASSE National Student Activities Task Force. His many awards include: ASSE Outstanding Service Award, Pikes Peak Chapter; ASSE Certificates of Recognition as a Technical Lecturer and Faculty Advisor; Crawford and Company Scholarship Award in 1995; a 1996 Program of Excellence Award by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education; 1997 Safety Professional of the Year, ASSE Pikes Peak Chapter; 1998 ASSE Outstanding Student Section Scholarship Award winner; the 1999 President's Award, ASSE Pikes Peak Chapter; NIOSH Training Project Grant awards 1999 - 2002; Trinidad State Junior College Faculty Member of the Year 2001, 2006 ASSE Educator of the Year Award, 2006 ASSE Greater Detroit Chapter Safety Professional of the Year Award, 2007 ASSE Region VII Safety Professional of the Year Award, and the 2008 Michigan Safety Conference Professional of the Year Award.
Professor McGlothlin also teaches in the Occupational Safety and Health program at Oakland University where he is actively involved with OSH students outside the classroom through ASSE Student Section actives, research projects, and experiential learning actives. Professor McGlothlin served on the ASSE Curriculum Committee that developed outcomes-based curriculum requirements, which the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) adopted as the standard for accreditation of safety-related degree programs. Dr. McGlothlin also serves as an ABET safety-related program evaluator and evaluation team chair. He has served as a commissioner on the Applied Science Accreditation Commission (ASAC) of ABET since 2004 and was appointed to the executive committee in 2006. Dr. McGlothlin is currently Chair-elect of the ABET Applied Science Accreditation Commission.
Professor McGlothlin has presented at many state, regional, and national conferences and is published in peer reviewed journals on a verity of safety and education related topics. In addition, he continues to work as a safety and health consultant and professional engineer domestically and internationally.
