Biography
Prior to arriving at Oakland University in 1989, I taught Exercise Science at 4 universities in Canada, South Africa, and the USA. I also initiated, and, for several years, directed the Institute of Preventive Medicine and Human Performance in Johannesburg, South Africa. I became Program Director of the Exercise Science Program at Oakland University in 1992 and was influential in developing the Minor in Exercise Science, revising the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences degree to include a focus area in Exercise Science, implementing new graduate certificates in Preventive Medicine, Complimentary Medicine & Wellness, and Exercise Science, and fostering the growth of the Master of Science Program in Exercise Science.

Degrees
BSc(PE), Physical Education, University of Guelph, Canada
MS, Exercise Physiology, University of Illinois
PhD, Exercise Science, Rhodes University, South Africa

Interests
As Exercise Science Program Director I oversee a vibrant, dynamic group of full-time and part-time faculty interested in the role of exercise in health promotion and disease prevention. We work very closely with Oakland's Meadow Brook Health Enhancement Institute, providing community and clinical services, medical resident education, and health enhancement research. My research interests lie primarily in understanding the role of exercise in the prevention of chronic disease. A current research project involves evaluating medical student well-being in response to preventive medicine education. I really enjoy teaching and advising students in the Exercise Science and Health Sciences programs. I teach courses in biomechanics, human motion analysis, physical activity and aging, clinical biomechanics, environmental adaptations and exercise, and personal health. I have been very active in the initiation of a proposed new academic degree in the School of Health Sciences focusing on Wellness, Health Promotion & Injury Prevention. Away from work I enjoy adventure travel, living history, reading thrillers, and staying physically active.
