Master of Science
This interdisciplinary program emphasizes the role of exercise in health improvment and in the primary and secondary prevention of chronic degenerative disease. The curriculum addresses the interrelationships among life-style, health, and physical activity, and optimization of human performance. Practical experience is gained through clinical, corporate and/or commercial internship sites. Graduates of the program are prepared for professional positions such as cardiac stress testing specialists; exercise specialists in medical settings; sports scientists; and directors of adult fitness programs, cardiac rehabilitation programs, and health maintenance/health improvement programs in corporate, industrial and educational settings.

Admission Requirements
Applicants for the Master of Science in exercise science program should hold a bachelors degree from an accredited institution with an undergraduate cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 or above. They should have completed the required prerequisite course work at the appropriate undergraduate or graduate level.


Applicants who are deficient in no more than 8 credit hours, or have less than a 3.00 cumulative GPA, may be considered for conditional admission status.

Admission Procedure
The applicant must complete the application forms provided by the Office of Graduate study. Two letters of reference from individuals qualified to comment on the applicant's preparation for graduate study and official transcripts of all academic work are also required. Applicants will be considered for September or January admission.

The applicant will be notified of the admission decision after all application materials have been received. Admission is selective, with preference given to applicants judged to be the best qualified to undertake the program of study. Qualified applicants may be required to have an interview with program faculty.

Degree Requirements
The Master of Science in exercise science program consists of 36 semester hours beyond the bachelor's degree. Prior graduate course work will be evaluated by the faculty. A maximum of 9 semester hours are transferable. Only those courses whose content is deemed equivalent to the School of Health Sciences' requirements for the Master of Science in exercise science and that meet the time limitations will be transferable.

Successful completion of clinical internships and a master's thesis or a comprehensive examination are required of each student.

The program of study is designed so that full-time students may complete the requirements within two academic years. Part-time students may complete the program within three to four academic years. A maximum of six years is allowed for completion of all degree requirements.
