Health Insurance

**IMPORTANT HEALTH INSURANCE POLICY CHANGES BEGINNING IN FALL 2013**

Beginning with Fall semester 2013, all international students must purchase the university sponsored health insurance plan, United Healthcare Student Resources. For the 2013-14 academic year, the policy cost is $1,557 annually and the cost will be billed to your Oakland University student account.

If your waiver is approved through the waiver process, you will be exempt from purchasing the university sponsored health insurance plan under ONLY two conditions:

1. You are insured by your government-sponsored U.S. based health plan.  (Examples include government sponsored students from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Amideast, Iraq, etc.)

2. You are covered under a U.S. employer based health plan as a dependent of your parent or spouse. In this case, you must purchase the medical evacuation and repatriation plan separately ($75).

Policies that do not meet one of the two conditions will not be accepted as adequate insurance coverage. Please be advised no other plans including your home country’s government sponsored health plan will be accepted, nor will plans like PSI or ISO.

All students will be automatically billed for the university sponsored health insurance plan, United Healthcare Student Resources in September 2013. We believe this is a quality health plan with a reasonable premium.

Coverage under this plan is available for spouses and children and these rates can be obtained by visiting the International Students and Scholars Office.

Health Insurance Options for F-2 or J-2 Family Members

  • All J-2 family members are required by U.S. federal law to carry health insurance at all times.
  • All F-2 family members are strongly recommended by Oakland University ISSO staff to carry health insurance at all times. Serious accident and illness that may occur when a person is uninsured can result in many problems receiving adequate care and paying the extremely high costs of American health treatment.
