Speaker Biographies

 

Dottie E. Deremo
A resident of Farmington Hills, Dottie E. Deremo is the president and chief executive officer of Hospice of Michigan. With revenues of approximately $70 million, Hospice of Michigan (HOM) is the largest state-wide nonprofit, end-of-life care provider in the nation, serving 900 patients a day across 54 counties in Michigan. Prior to working for HOM, Deremo was vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer at Henry Ford Health System. She has held several executive positions at the Detroit Medical Center and been an assistant professor at both Michigan State University and Wayne State University during her 40-year health care career.

 

Laurel Felsenfeld, BSN, RN, CCM, CRRN

Laurel Felsenfeld is founder and president of Aging Answers, LLC and Axis Case Management of Farmington Hills, Michigan. For more than 10 years, Aging Answers has provided professional geriatric assessment and care management to guide our elders to support services that best match their needs, values and financial resources; nurture and support caregivers; and help families plan for future care needs. Felsenfeld earned her BSN cum laude with SON honors from Oakland University, and is certified in case management (CCM) and rehabilitation nursing (CRRN). Her clinical experience is in traumatic brain injury, inpatient rehabilitation, discharge planning, and home health care nursing and administration. She is the 2009 recipient of the Oakland University Nightingale Award in Community Nursing.

 

Kerri D. Schuiling

Kerri D. Schuiling holds a PhD (nursing) and a graduate certificate in Women’s Studies from the University of Michigan.  She is certified as both a women’s health nurse practitioner and nurse-midwife and has worked as a nurse educator and advance practice nurse for more than 30 years. She has experience as a nurse educator in both private and not-for-profit institutions; unionized and non union settings. She is currently employed as the Associate Dean & Director of the School of Nursing at Northern Michigan University. She is the Chief Nurse Officer of a School of Nursing that enrolls the  largest number of students on NMU’s campus (676 students) and is responsible for a budget of $2.5 million dollars. She supervises 24 faculty who teach in programs from the certificate to master’s level.

Lisa Sewell DeMoss 

Lisa DeMoss established the Law Offices of Lisa DeMoss, a Michigan health law and consulting practice after twenty-four years of corporate legal practice in Detroit.  Through February 2009, she was Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Compliance Officer for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, an independent affiliate of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, and the largest health insurer in Michigan, serving the needs of over five million members.

 

DeMoss served as BCBSM’s chief legal counsel from 2003 to 2009, with responsibility for Legal staff oversight, the corporate compliance function and corporate and financial investigations involving employees, vendors, agents, and providers. She was designated Corporate Compliance Officer with contracted and statutory responsibilities for government program compliance monitoring and oversight.  As a member of the senior leadership team, she served on strategic and operating committees and performed the duties of corporate secretary to a 35 person governing board.  Additionally, she appeared before state and federal courts and tribunals representing the parent corporation and its various subsidiaries on contested legal and regulatory matters, including appearances before Congressional committees and State and Federal regulatory bodies. Prior to her tenure as General Counsel, DeMoss was Litigation Counsel and principal counsel to the auto/national customer division of the company.

 

Before joining the BCBSM legal department, she was a partner in a general legal practice in Detroit, Michigan, where she specialized in product liability and insurance defense work. She has spoken extensively on various health law topics and business ethics. She is a member of a number of legal organizations and serves on the foundation boards of the Detroit Metro Bar Association and the Oakland University School of Nursing. She served as President of the Detroit Bar Association and the Nursing School Board of Visitors.  DeMoss is a graduate of the Wayne State University Law School and Michigan State University where she graduated summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa.
