Marketing

         Vision

To be the leading mid-size university Marketing Program in Michigan that prepares its students for a career in sales and marketing in a steadily enhancing intellectual and ethical environment that, for students and faculty alike, stimulates critical thinking, provides an active learning environment, and promotes professional development.

Mission

To develop students who have a strong foundation in the fundamental concepts and theory of marketing and are prepared to apply this knowledge in the pursuit of a career as a sales and marketing professional.

Marketing Degree Goals and Objectives

Goal: The students obtaining a major in marketing are to develop skills needed to work in the diverse field of marketing.

Objectives: To meet the marketing degree goal, the students should understand the marketing core concepts.

The student should:

  • have an understanding of segmentation, targeting, and positioning
  • understand buyer behavior
  • know how to conduct research
  • have the ability to do a situational analysis
  • create a marketing plan (i.e. integrating product, price, promotion, and channels of distribution)


Human Resources Management

         Goals for the Major

The major in human resources management develops the skills needed to administer the personnel functions of organizations. It is designed primarily for students who intend to pursue careers in administration, human resource management, labor relations or wherever the management of people at work is a central concern. Emphasis is placed on developing an intensive understanding of the concepts and techniques needed to acquire, develop and utilize an organization's human resources.

Student Learning Objectives

The learning objectives of this degree represent the common body of knowledge and skill categories found in both the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) guidelines (administration, recruitment and retention, labor relations, compensation, etc.) and the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) (organizational behavior). The curriculum is also consistent with the SBA mission in terms of advancing students' knowledge and abilities.

Graduates of the human resource management program will:

  • Understand of the perspectives that form the context for business
  • Have foundational knowledge in accounting behavioral science, economics, and mathematics and statistics
  • Skill in written and oral communication
  • Understand the ethical and global issues within the context of business
  • Understand the influence of political, social, legal and regulatory, environmental and technological issues
  • Understand the impact of demographic diversity on organizations
