Department of Music, Theatre and Dance
A note to prospective jazz students

August 12, 2009

Hello,

My name is Miles Brown, and I am the new Director of the Jazz Department here at Oakland University.  I’m coming to Oakland in the footsteps of Danny Jordan, who recently passed away.  Beloved by both the students and faculty, Mr. Jordan has left a strong imprint of excellence at OU, and this is a tradition that I hope to continue. The Jazz Department plans to honor his memory this year by dedicating our first concert to him and his family.

I am excited to have the opportunity to carry on the great legacy of jazz at Oakland.  As an active performer and teacher, I’m looking forward to developing Oakland to be one of Michigan’s fine jazz programs.  Through performances, clinics, and festivals, I believe the Jazz Department can take full advantage of the wealth of resources that are available from the Detroit area, and can be exposed to other influences from across the country.

Although I’m new to Oakland University and Detroit, my brief time here has been filled with conversations with talented, kind-hearted people, who I believe are indicative of the potential that Oakland exhibits.  Together with Sean Dobbins, our new Artist-in-Residence, I’m looking forward to making great music and forming great bonds with the wonderful faculty, students, and staff at OU.  Please feel free to email or call if you have any questions about the program.  Thank you.
