As part of a Korean government project called World-Class University (WCU), Sogang University (SU) won a $10 million grant to complete a proposal titled “Service Systems Engineering for the Creation of New Growth Engine based on Knowledge Service” in April 2009.

SBA MIS Professor Vijayan Sugumaran is part of the team that submitted the winning proposal selected by Korea’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology for the WCU project aimed at stimulating academic research activities in key growth-generating fields.

This three-year project involves launching a new major named Service System Engineering, combining fields of business management, physics, and computer engineering, with an initial enrollment of 40 students. The opening of the program is set in spring 2010.

A total of four Sogang Business School faculty members, along with one SU professor of physics and another of computer engineering, will be involved in the project, while six renowned international scholars will also join the project for joint research and teaching. One of the international scholars on the project, Sugumaran will participate in establishing a department and curriculum for the new major as well as conduct research with partners at Sogang University.
