Criminal Justiceto nowhere
Criminal justice, often considered together with criminology, is the study of criminal offending, victimization, and processing of offenders by the criminal justice system. Criminal Justice considers a broad range of topics that  include: identifying motivations and opportunities for criminal offending, predicting patterns of offending, examining patterns of offending and victimization across different groups in society, evaluating the effectiveness of various crime control policies, and examining the primary components of the the criminal and juvenile justice systems. 

The major is an interdisciplinary program offering students a thorough understanding of the criminal law, the social forces related to crime and delinquency, the evaluation of crime control policy, or the operation of courts, law enforcement agencies, and correctional institutions.

Education Specialist in Leadershipto nowhere

The nationally recognized and state approved Education Specialist program is based on the belief that leadership must be distributed throughout schools and school districts. Thus, this program prepares teacher leaders as well as administrators to provide the leadership needed by effective school organizations. The Ed.S. program emphasizes a cohort structure with the belief that learning is increased by the ongoing interaction of all members of learning communities. A mentorship is required with the belief that theory must be linked to practice. A program portfolio is required with the belief that reflection on practice is key to building leadership capacity. Cohort members will develop the skills, knowledge, and dispositions needed to play many different leadership roles within the education profession.

Master of Arts in Counselingto nowhere

The counseling program prepares individuals to work as professional counselors with children, youth and adults in school or community settings. The curriculum is designed to encourage both personal and professional development of students. Initial courses introduce theoretical and professional components of counseling. Later courses emphasize research and clinical counseling skills. Students are supervised as they apply their knowledge in clinical courses that use on-campus laboratory facilities and approved field training sites. The goal of the counseling program is to prepare students to work in a variety of human service settings. Master of Arts in Communicationto nowhere

The Master of Arts degree in communication provides intellectual grounding in communication theory and research methods, and specialization in one of three areas of concentration offered by the department, namely:  Culture and Communication, Interpersonal Communication, and Media Studies. The program offers opportunities for those wishing to pursue a Ph.D. in communication or a related discipline. It also will be valuable for practitioners in business, education, media or non-profit organizations seeking professional enhancement.

The program is committed to a critical approach to the study of communication and recognizes the central role communication plays in the creation of productive relationships across divisions of identity, culture, and geography and in building more sustainable, equitable, and enriched communities in our increasingly globally connected world. Students will be trained in diverse methodological and epistemological approaches to the study of communication, including rhetoric, intercultural communication, cultural studies, interpersonal communication, and media studies.

Upon graduation, students will have gained a greater understanding of the impact of communication in a range of contexts; a general knowledge of research approaches in communication; and an ability to further the research, writing, and analytical skills needed in today’s world.

Master of Business Administrationto nowhere
The Oakland M.B.A. program gives special emphasis on information technology and international business. Students will learn the tools for managerial roles in private, public, or not-for-profit sectors of the economy. The program is designed for undergraduate majors from any discipline, including business or management, and students with an undergraduate business degree or one of the functional areas of management should have two years of work experience before entering the M.B.A. program. M.B.A. students can either focus on one of the 10 areas of concentration — from entrepreneurship to marketing — or take a variety of elective courses for a more general study.


Master of Arts in Teaching in Elementary Educationto nowhere

The Master of Arts in Teaching in Elementary Education (MATEE) with elementary certification is designed for career changers and individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree in a field other than education. Designed for individuals who are considering a career in teaching elementary or middle school, it is a quality, two-year program with Oakland University’s excellent reputation for preparing teachers to enhance employability.

Classes are held in the evening and on scheduled Saturdays, except for the final semester of student teaching. Courses are taken as a cohort group with coursework beginning in the fall semester.


Master of Arts in Teaching in Secondary Educationto nowhere
Aligned with the State of Michigan certification and endorsement requirements, this Master of Arts in Teaching program is designed for individuals who already have a bachelor’s degree and wish to become certified to teach middle school or high school. Additional major and minor courses may be necessary for individuals whose prior coursework does not include sufficient credits for the core competencies set by the Michigan Department of Education for teaching a major and minor content area.


Master of Education in Early Childhood Educationto nowhere

The Master of Education in Early Childhood Education prepares professionals to work with children from birth through age 8 in public and private schools and agency settings. It provides training for the direction and evaluation of early childhood programs and the coordination of community resources for young children and families. The program combines theory with observation and participation in clinical, community and school practicum settings.

The program emphasizes a broad interdisciplinary view of early childhood education and child development. Also emphasized are multicultural issues concerning young children and their families, and the need for educational programs to respect and respond to children’s developmental variabilities and exceptionalities.

OU also offers an Early Childhood Education Endorsement. Classes taken for the endorsement may count toward the degree. 


Master of Education in Special Educationto nowhere
This Master of Education degree focuses on the broader concepts of exceptionality (learning, instruction and development) and an in-depth preparation for one or two areas of exceptionality. Exploration of theory and research and advanced application in instruction and assessment with selected populations are integrated throughout the program. It is designed to provide students advanced training and expertise in a chosen area of concentration: specific learning disability, emotional impairment, or autism spectrum disorder. 

Cohorts are currently offered in Birmingham, Flint, Howell, Macomb, Wayne, Grand Rapids (M.Ed. only), online and on campus.

This Master of Education program empowers students to become a leader committed to making schools culturally relevant, and creating just and supportive learning environments that maintain high expectations for all students. The Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.) degree program at Oakland University provides a challenging education for individuals seeking professional careers and for those already employed in governmental or other public agencies. The need for professionals holding M.P.A. degrees is recognized due to the complexity of agencies at the state and local levels and the continued concerns for responsive and effective public service at all levels. The M.P.A. program offers a generalist foundation through a set of core courses that is bolstered with opportunities for specialization through its electives and the directed capstone project/internship option. Master of Arts in Teaching in Reading and Language Artsto nowhere
Most students in this Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program are classroom teachers whose daily work requires them to deal with the literacy needs of young children, adolescents or adults. Instruction in the MAT program prepares classroom teachers to work effectively and efficiently in settings where class sizes may range from five to 40 or more learners. The MAT program allows certified teachers to add a Michigan endorsement as a classroom reading teacher (BT), a language arts teacher (BX) or a building level reading specialist (BR). Endorsement candidates must complete the coursework and pass the appropriate State of Michigan certification endorsement test before the endorsement can be issued by the State.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Endorsementto nowhere
The ASD Certificate is an 18- to 24-month, part-time program designed for individuals who currently have or are eligible to receive a teaching certificate in Michigan, and who wish to receive state certification to teach individuals on the autism spectrum. All credits may be applied to the M.Ed. in Special Education, which can be earned with as few as four additional classes, depending on prior credentials.  Cohorts are currently offered in Birmingham, Flint, Howell, Macomb, Wayne, Grand Rapids (M.Ed. only), online and on campus.

The National Career Development Association’s CDF certification is an extensive, 120-hour program.  Individuals who successfully complete the course requirements may apply for the Global Career Development Facilitator Certificate. Instruction is personalized for your work setting and taught by certified instructors.

Early Childhood Education Endorsementto nowhere
The Early Childhood Education Endorsement is six courses (22-24 credits) and is available to certified teachers. The program consists of the five courses in Level I of the M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education plus a two-credit, state-mandated practicum. OU also offers Master's of Education in Early Childhood Education Endorsement. Classes taken for the endorsement may count toward the degree. 


School Counseling, Advanced Specialization to nowhere
The advanced specialization in school counseling is designed for individuals who already have a master's degree in counseling. It consists of 12 graduate credit hours taken in a cohort that starts in the fall semester. Completion can lead to a school counselor license. Courses are scheduled in the evenings and on Saturdays.
