Scheduling Appointments 

1. Set up an advising appointment at least once per academic year. Advisers in the communication and journalism programs and the College of Arts and Sciences Academic Advising office are qualified to provide academic advice. To schedule an appointment for communication or journalism advising, call the department office at (248) 370-4120.
2. Once you are a senior (more than 91 accumulated credits), make sure you have scheduled at least one appointment with your program adviser. If you are a journalism major, you also should schedule an appointment with an arts and sciences adviser.
3. Make advising appointments as soon as the schedule of classes is released on SAIL. Because of advising demand after release, students may not get an appointment before they enroll for the next semester.
4. Brief advising questions may be handled by email. For communication questions, email Renee Ligeski at ligeski@oakland.edu and for journalism questions, email Holly Shreve Gilbert at shreve@oakland.edu.

Advising Sessions 

1. Bring your advising records to all advising appointments. This includes past advising checklists and Transfer Equivalency Worksheets [TEW's]).
2. Complete a checklist and bring it to your advising session. Download current checklists and degree plans at oakland.edu/degreerequirements
3. Ask questions about anything that seems confusing or incorrect.

Class Selections 

1. Understand the university and College of Arts and Sciences requirements. Besides your major and minor classes, you must complete significant General Education and exploratory coursework. Make sure classes you need to fulfill a requirement meet the catalog stipulations.
2. Don't sign up for a class you have already received credit for. This happens often to transfer students. Classes at another school often have different titles and usually have different numbers. Check your advising chart and TCE or TEW.

Graduating 

Follow the steps to graduate on the Registrar's website. This includes running a degree evaluation and bringing it to an appointment with your academic adviser.
