The department encourages all art history majors to complete AH399 Field Experience in Art History, all studio art majors to complete SA399 Field Experience in Studio Art and all graphic design majors to complete DES399 Internship in Design. An internship not only provides a real-life experience in the arts, but also provides useful contacts for employment possibilities and recommendations for graduate school.
Placements have included the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, Chelsea Antiques, the Oakland University Art Gallery, Meadow Brook Hall, Paul Haig Gallery, Arnold Klein Gallery, Paint Creek Center for the Arts, Creative Arts Center in Pontiac, Detroit Artists Market, Victor Associates, Gallery Nikko in Birmingham, The Print Gallery in Southfield, the Oakland County Office of Arts, Culture and Film, and the Visual Resources Library in the Department of Art and Art History.
Students are required to meet Professor Dick Goody, Art and Art History Field Experience Advisor, in the semester before the beginning of the semester in which they wish to intern.
