Phyllis Law Googasian Award

This award honors and recognizes women who have contributed to the advancement of women at Oakland University and beyond through distinguished leadership, scholarship, advocacy, mentoring, program development, or other activities. The award is presented at a luncheon by the Oakland University chapter of the American Council on Education (ACE) Network for Women Leaders. The award is in honor of Phyllis Law Googasian, trustee emerita, for her commitment to OU and her dedication to the advancement of women.
Eligibility: Any member of the Oakland University faculty (including special instructors and lecturers), administrators, administrative professionals, and other staff members are eligible. Nominations are welcome from any University employee. Download the nomination form on the award website.
Teaching Excellence Awards
Deadline: Nomination period is late October - late November.

The Senate and Learning Committee presents the Teaching Excellence Awards. Two awards are made: one for a tenured or tenure-track member of the faculty, and another to a nontenure-track faculty member at Oakland University. Each award includes a cash stipend and will be presented at the Annual Faculty Recognition Luncheon, tentatively scheduled in mid-April. Names of previous Teaching Excellence Award winners are listed on a plaque in the lobby of Kresge Library.
Eligibility: Nominations may be made by any member of the Oakland University community, including students, faculty, alumni, administrators, and staff. Nomination forms should be completed online. Faculty may not self-nominate for the award. Previous Teaching Excellence Award winners and current members of the Teaching and Learning Committee are not eligible for nomination.
URC New Investigator Research Excellence Award

This award program is intended to recognize junior faculty members for their significant achievements at Oakland University. The competition is open to scholars from all disciplines each year.
Eligibility: All non-tenured assistant professors at Oakland University who have yet to begin the tenure review process are eligible to compete for this award. Nomination forms should be completed online. Candidates must be nominated by someone other than themselves.
URC Research Excellence Award

Research Excellence Award website
The University Research Committee selects an award recipient in one of the following categories that rotate on a three-year cycle; social sciences/humanities, natural and mathematical sciences, and professional schools. Details of the award cycles are listed on the award website. A $2,500 award is presented to the award recipient at Spring Commencement.
Eligibility: All faculty members of Oakland University are eligible to enter the Oakland University Research Excellence Competition. Candidates may nominate themselves or be nominated by others. Priority is given to those researchers who have not received the Research Excellence Award in prior years. Nomination forms should be completed online.
Distinguished Professors

Upon recommendation of the President and Provost, the Board of Trustees may appoint individuals to the rank of distinguished professor for the duration of the individual's active service at Oakland, except for removal for cause, or distinguished professor emeritus. The appointment of individuals to distinguished professorships will be based on the criteria for professorships set forth in the document Oakland University Tenure and Promotion Statement, and, in addition, the rigorous application of one or more of the following criteria: preeminence in scholarship, preeminence in teaching, and preeminence in public or professional service.
Faculty Emeriti Professional Development Program

To assist and encourage the scholarly pursuits of emeriti professors, the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost has established a fund to support travel to professional meetings. Up to 5 emeriti professors will be supported each year to travel to a conference or equivalent professional/scholarly function within their discipline, to either a) attend the meeting/function for the purpose of expanding their knowledge, or b) deliver a scholarly presentation based upon their past or current work. Funding will be provided in the amount of up to $750 to colleagues who present at meetings and up to $500 to those who attend and participate. Receipts will be needed to process these payments.
Eligibility: Emeriti professors should submit a letter of interest to the Provost to request these funds. The letter should specify the name and dates of the meeting and specify if the purpose of travel is to attend or to present. If it is to present, the title of the presentation should be provided.

American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellowship

The AAAS is an international non-profit organization dedicated to advancing science around the world by serving as an educator, leader, spokesperson, and professional association. A fellow is an AAAS member whose efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications are scientifically or socially distinguished and who has been a continuous member for the four year period leading up to the year or nomination. Examples of areas in which nominees may have made significant contributions are research; teaching; technology; services to professional societies; administration in academe, industry, and government; and communicating and interpreting science to the public.
Eligibility: A individual must have been a member of the AAAS since December 31, 2009 or earlier for the 2013 cycle; 4 continuous years. AAAS Fellows are nominated by their peers. See website for detailed nomination information.
American Association of University Professors (AAUP)

The AAUP offers travel grants and awards for individuals, chapters, and conferences. Awards are given to administrators, trustees, individuals providing excellent leadership, journalists, legislators, and others, as well as in recognition of lobbying work, outstanding chapters, excellent newsletters, and web sites. Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award

The Society of Automobile Engineers (SAE) Teetor Program stimulates contacts between younger engineering educators and practicing engineers in industry and government. Its objective is to provide an engineering atmosphere in which these teachers can meet and exchange views with practicing engineers. This award includes a trip to a major SAE meeting and two years of SAE membership, and is presented at the SAE World Congress or at a major SAE aerospace meeting.
Eligibility: Applicants must be a young engineering educator with more than three, but less than ten years of full-time faculty experience and be affiliated with an ABET-accredited engineering school.

This award from the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology recognizes teaching practices, techniques, or innovative and new education approaches that attract girls and women to math, computing, and engineering. The award recognizes educators as well as the practices in K12 or undergraduate education. The recipient of this award will receive a $5,000 prize, and will be honored at the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing awards celebration.
Eligibility: Educators (either individuals or teams) in K12 or undergraduate education are eligible for this award.
U.S. Professors of the Year

U.S. Professors of the Year website
The U.S. Professors of the Year program salutes the most outstanding undergraduate instructors in the country - those who excel in teaching and positively influence the lives and careers of students. Winners may be on the state or national level. Each state level winner receives media recognition and will attend the November awards luncheon. Each national winner receives $5,000 contributed by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, an invitation to speak at the November awards luncheon, media coverage, and an opportunity to participate in related activities.
Eligibility: All undergraduate teachers in the U.S., of any academic rank at any type of undergraduate institution, are eligible for this award.

American Society for Cell Biology (WICB) Junior and Senior Awards

The WICB Committee recognizes outstanding achievements in cell biology by presenting two Career Recognition Awards at the ASCB Annual Meeting - the Junior Award and the Senior Award.
Eligibility: The Junior Award is given to a woman in an early stage of her career who is making exceptional scientific contributions to cell biology and exhibits the potential for continuing a high level of scientific endeavor and leadership.
Eligibility: The Senior Award is given to a woman or man in a later career stage whose outstanding scientific achievements are coupled with a long-standing record of support for women in science and by mentorship of both men and women in scientific careers.
Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) Excellence in Science Award

The FASEB Excellence in Science Award is given in recognition of outstanding achievement by women in biological science. The award recipient will be expected to present at the annual meeting of a FASEB member society and will receive a $10,000 unrestricted research grant.
Eligibility: Recipients are women whose career achievements have contributed significantly to further our understanding of a particular discipline by excellence in research. Nominees are typically women who are senior in their field and nationally known for their outstanding contributions in research, leadership, and mentorship. Nominees and nominators must be members of at least one of FASEB's 24 member societies.

American Chemical Society (ACS), Kavli Foundation Emerging Leader in Chemistry Lecturer

The Kavli Foundation will sponsor a series of lectures recognizing the work of young chemical scientists. This series will recognize scientists younger than 40 years old for their achievements in scientific or engineering research. Lectures will be presented at spring and fall meetings.

American Chemical Society (ACS), Stanley C. Israel Regional Award for Advancing Diversity in the Chemical Sciences

The Stanley C. Israel Regional Award recognizes individuals and/or institutions that have advanced diversity in the chemical sciences and significantly stimulate or foster activities that promote inclusiveness within the region. The award consists of a $1,000 grant to support and further the activities for which the award was made. The ACS will also fund the recipient's travel expenses to the ACS regional meeting at which the award will be presented.
Eligibility: Nominees may come from academia, industry, government, or independent entities, and may also be organizations, including ACS Local Sections and Divisions. The nominee must have created and fostered ongoing programs or activities that result in increased numbers of persons from diverse and underrepresented minority groups, persons with disabilities, or women who participate in the chemical enterprise.

ACS Fellows Program

The ACS Fellows Program recognizes and honors members of the ACS who have made significant contributions to the science and provided excellent service to the ACS community.
Eligibility: Nominees must be current members of the ACS and show excellence and leadership in both of two areas: (1) science, the profession, education, and/or management, and (2) volunteer service in the ACS community. Nomination documents must address both of these areas. Nominations can be made by ACS National Committees, Technical Divisions, Local Sections, and individual members.
WCC Rising Star Award

The WCC Rising Star Award recognizes exceptional early- to mid-career women chemists across all areas of chemistry who have demonstrated outstanding promise for contributions to their respective fields. The award includes the opportunity to present at a WCC-sponsored symposium, travel support, and networking opportunities. To be given annually, beginning in 2012, this new award is also intended to help promote retention of women in science.
Eligibility: The award is open to all female ACS members in chemistry and chemical engineering working in academic, industrial, government, non-profit or other employment sectors. Appropriate candidates will typically be no more than 15 years from receipt of their terminal scientific degree and have demonstrated outstanding promise for contributions to their respective fields.
ACS Award for Encouraging Women into Careers in the Chemical Sciences

This award recognizes significant accomplishments by individuals who have stimulated or fostered the interest of women in chemistry, promoting their professional developments as chemists or chemical engineers. The award is for $5,000 with a grant of $10,000 made to an academic institution, designated by the recipient, to strengthen its activities in meeting the objectives of the award.
Eligibility: Nominees for the award may come from any professional setting: academia, industry, government, or other independent facility.
WCC Eli Lilly Travel Award

The WCC and Eli Lilly and Company sponsor this program to provide funding for undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral female chemists to travel to meetings to present the results of their research. Awards are made on the basis of scientific merit and financial need.
Eligibility: Applications should be limited to one per research group. Awards will be given with preference to the following order: 1.) Any applicant who will be making her first presentation (regardless of format) at a national or major meeting. 2.) Graduate or postdoctoral applicants who have not presented at a national or major meeting since completing their undergraduate degree.

Section Outstanding Teaching Award

This award is given by each ASEE section, with support, where possible, from local industry. The award, which focuses on outstanding classroom performance, recognizes teachers of engineering and engineering technology students and serves as an incentive to make further significant contributions to teaching. The award consists of an appropriate honorarium, where possible, presented by the local section. Presentations are made at the section annual meeting.
Eligibility: Candidates may be teachers of any subject included in an ABET/CEAB accredited engineering or engineering technology curriculum. In addition to technical courses, subjects may also include the humanities and social studies, mathematics and science.
Women in Engineering Division (WIED) Mara H. Wasburn Apprentice Educator Grant (AEG)

The goal of this grant program is to build capacity for the engineering education community through "apprenticeship" and mentoring to members of the community who are at the entry/launch point of their engineering education career. Up to two grants are given to travel to the ASEE Annual Conference as part of the Mara H. Wasburn Apprentice Educator Grant program. Each grant consists of a reimbursement of receipted registration, travel, food, and accommodation expenses up to a maximum of $2,000.
Eligibility: Eligible women are graduate students, post-docs, lecturers, research associates, other non-tenure-track faculty, and tenure-track faculty who are not more than three years into their first faculty position. The nominee does not need to be a member of the ASEE.
National Academy of Engineering (NAE)

The NAE offers 5 awards for engineering and innovation. These awards salute leaders in engineering for their lifetime dedication to their field and their commitment to advancing the human condition through great engineering achievement and/or through innovation in engineering and technology education. National Science Foundation (NSF) - Broadening Participation Research Initiation Grants in Engineering 2012 (BRIGE)

BRIGE program promotes the participation of engineering researchers early in their career from all concentrations and groups, especially from under-represented groups. This program supports engineering researchers who share the NSF's commitment to diversity. The Directorate for Engineering expects to fund 25 to 30 grants with a maximum of $175,000 in total over 24 months per award.

Eligibility: The recipient shall be selected based primarily on her excellence in creatively dealing with the challenges professional women are faced with in the mobility industry.

This award is administered jointly by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The award of $5,000 is given for contributions to computer and digital systems architecture where the field of computer architecture is considered at present to encompass the combined hardware-software design and analysis of computing and digital systems.

Gordon Bell Prize

Gordon Bell Prize website
The Gordon Bell Prizes are awarded each year to recognize outstanding achievement in high-performance computing. The purpose of the award is to track the progress over time of parallel computing, with particular emphasis on rewarding innovation in applying high-performance computing to applications in science. Prizes are awarded for peak performance as well as special achievements in scalability and time-to-solution on important science and engineering problems and low price/performance. Financial support of the $10,000 award is provided by Gordon Bell, a pioneer in high-performance and parallel computing.

The SIGCOMM Award honors computer communication professionals for outstanding lifetime technical achievement in the fields of data and computer communications. The award consists of a $2,000 honorarium and will be presented at the annual SIGCOMM Conference, at which time the awardee is invited to deliver a technical address.
Eligibility: The nominee need not be a member of ACM SIGCOMM, but the nominator must be a member of ACM SIGCOMM. Previous awardees and members of the Award Committee and SIGCOMM Executive Commitee are not eligible.

Design Automation Conference (DAC) Marie R. Pistilli Women in Electronic Design Automation Achievement Award

This award is given at the Design Automation Conference (DAC), the premier conference devoted to design and design automation of electronic systems (EDA). This annual award recognizes individuals who have visibly helped to advance the profile of women in the EDA industry. Past awardees played key roles in creating, launching, or managing projects that involved contributions from women, or created opportunities for women in the EDA industry. Others have been leaders within a company or organization who have helped raise the awareness of women or mentors or role models of successful women.
Eligibility: The Marie R. Pistilli award is open to men and women in industry or academia with technical or non-technical backgrounds.

Mathematical Congress of the Americas (MCA) Travel Grants

These travel grants provide partial travel support for invited senior mathematician speakers (typical award amount: $1,600) and for early career mathematicians (typical award amount:$1,800) to attend the MCA. Information about the current session's location and date is listed on the website.
Eligibility: These grants are only open to mathematicians affiliated with a U.S. institution. The AMS especially encourages early career mathematicians (within 6 years of their doctorate), women, and under-represented populations to apply. See website for additional application information.
AMS-Simons Travel Grants
Deadline: Applications begin on February 1.
AMS-Simons Travel Grants website
Each AMS-Simons Travel Grant provides an early career mathematician with $2,000 per year for two years to be used for research-related travel. The department of the awardee will also receive a small amount of funding to help enhance its research environment. Each applicant will also choose a mentor with whom to interact during the two-year period of the grant.
Eligibility: Applicants must be located in the U.S. and have completed their Ph.D. within the last 4 years. The applicant's research must be in an area supported by the Division of Mathematical Sciences of the National Science Foundation. See website for additional application information.
International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) Travel Grants

These travel grants provide funding for U.S. mathematicians attending ICM 2014.

AMS Graduate Student Travel Grants
Deadlines: Applications accepted August through the end of September for JMM, and mid-July for AMS Sectional meetings.
AMS Graduate Student Travel Grants website
These travel grants provide partial travel support for graduate students to attend two types of AMS meetings - Joint Mathematics meetings (JMM) in January (award amount: $500) and AMS Sectional meetings in Spring and Fall (award amount: $250). Support is only available after the meeting when proof of attendance can be provided.
Eligibility: Each program supports only selected doctoral students in mathematics. A representative of the university must submit a statement verifying the expected date of graduation. The current institution of the applicant must be more than 50 miles from the site of the meeting. See website for additional application information.
AMS China Exchange Program
Deadlines: March 15 for travel that takes place the following academic year (ex. March 15, 2013 for 2013-2014 academic year).

This exchange program supports visits between research colleagues from the U.S. and from China. For travel from the U.S. to China, preference will be given to senior mathematicians whose visit will have a positive impact on the mathematical research community in China. For travel from China to the U.S., preference will be given to mathematical scientists in the beginning of their research careers.

Mathematics Travel Grants

Mathematics Travel Grants website
The Mathematics Travel Grants provide full or partial support for travel and subsistence for a meeting or conference in the applicant's field or specialization. The grants provide women mathematicians a valuable opportunity to advance their research activities and their visibility in the research community. A maximum of $1,500 for domestic travel and of $2,000 for foreign travel will be funded.
Eligibility: The conference or the applicant's research must be in an area supported by the Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) of the National Science Foundation. Applicants must be women holding a doctorate with a work address in the USA. Anyone who has been awards an AWM-NSF travel grant in the past two years or who receives more than $2,000 yearly in external government funding is ineligible.
Falconer Lectures

AWM honors women who have made distinguished contributions to the mathematical sciences or mathematics education with the Falconer Lecture series. These one-hour expository lectures are presented at Mathfest each summer.
Kovalevsky Lectures

Kovalevsky Lectures website
AWM and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) established this lecture series to highlight significant contributions of women to applied or computational mathematics. This lecture is given at the SIAM annual meeting. AWM and SIAM pays for the winner's travel and local expenses. The Department of Energy is the sponsor covering expenses for this lecture series.
Eligibility: This lectureship may be awarded to anyone in the scientific or engineering community whose work highlights the achievement of women in applied or computational mathematics. Nominations for this award are solicited. Nominations will remain active for a total of two years (one year beyond the initial nomination).
Noether Lectures

AWM honors women who have made fundamental and sustained contributions to the mathematical sciences. These one-hour expository lectures are presented at the Joint Mathematics meetings each January.

The purpose of the Hay Award is to recognize outstanding achievements in any area of mathematics education, to be interpreted in the broadest possible sense. The annual presentation of this award is intended to highlight the importance of mathematics education and to evoke the memory of all that Louise Hay exemplified as a teacher, scholar, administrator, and human being. This award is given to a woman at the Joint Prize Session at the Joint Mathematics meetings every January.

Gweneth Humphreys Award for Mentorship of Undergraduate Women in Mathematics

The purpose of the Humphreys Award is to recognize outstanding mentorship activities. This prize will be awarded annually to a mathematics teacher (female or male) who has encouraged female undergraduate students to pursue mathematical careers and/or the study of mathematics at the graduate level. The recipient will receive a cash prize and be featured in an article in the AWM newsletter.

Ruth I. Michler Memorial Prize

This award is given annually to a woman recently promoted to Associate Professor or an equivalent position in the mathematics sciences. The prize provides a fellowship for the awardee to spend a semester in the Mathematics Department of Cornell University without teaching obligations. This award honors outstanding women at this stage of their careers and enables them to focus on their research in the stimulating environment of the Cornell University Mathematics Department. The prize includes $47,000 for the semester at Cornell University with a supplemental housing/subsistence stipend amount of $3,000. Office space, library access, and computing facilities will be provided by Cornell University.
Eligibility: Applicants must be women recently promoted to Associate Professor or the equivalent in the mathematical sciences at an institution of higher learning other than Cornell University. There is no restriction on the nationality of the applicant or on the country in which she holds a position. This award enables women to return to physics research careers after having had to interrupt those careers. The fellowship consists of a one-year award of up to $45,000 (applicants can apply in a subsequent year for one additional year of support). Allowed expenses include dependent care (limited to 50% of the award), salary, travel, equipment, and tuition and fees. Overhead charges by the institution are not allowed.
Eligibility: Applicants must currently be a U.S. citizen, legal resident, or resident alien of the United States or Canada and currently reside in Canada or the U.S. Applicants must have completed work toward a PhD. and provide written proof that they will have institutional affiliation during the tenure of their grant. Institutional affiliation at the time of application is not necessary.
Marie Geoppert Mayer Award

This annual award recognizes and enhances outstanding achievement by a woman physicist in the early years of her career, and to provide opportunities for her to present these achievements to others through public lectures in the spirit of Maria Geoppert Mayer. The award consists of $2,500 plus a $4,000 travel allowance to provide opportunities for the recipient to give lectures in her field of physics at four institutions and at a meeting of the Society.
Eligibility: This award is to be given to a woman during the early years of her career, no later than ten years after the granting of the PhD. degree. The lectures must be given at institutions within the United States or its possessions within two years after the award is made.

This annual award promotes the participation of under-represented minorities in physics by identifying and recognizing a distinguished minority physicist who has made significant contributions to physics research. The program will help publicize the lecturer's work and career development to the physics community. The Lectureship consists of a stipend of $3,500 plus support for travel to an APS meeting and to at least three academic institutions for visits with minority students.
Eligibility: Any Black, Hispanic, or Native American who has made significant contributions to physics research and is an effective communicator is eligible.

Sigma Delta Epsilon - Graduate Women in Science National Fellowships

The SDE/GWIS National Fellowships Program offers fellowships to help increase knowledge in the fundamental sciences and to encourage research careers in the sciences by women. Endowment funds provide the annual income that supports scientific research done by SDE/GWIS award winners. The maximum allowable award amount is $10,000. There is an application fee for non-GWIS members interested in applying for these awards.
Eligibility: Awards will be made to women holding a degree from a recognized institution of higher learning, of outstanding ability and promise in research, who are performing research at any institution in the U.S. or abroad. Career level (e.g. graduate students vs. assistant professor) of the candidate will be taken into consideration when reviewing the proposals. Active SDE/GWIS membership is encouraged at the time of and throughout the duration of funding.

These two-year fellowships are awarded yearly to over 100 early-career scientists and scholars in recognition of distinguished performance and a unique potential to make substantial contributions to their field. Fellows are selected on the basis of their independent research accomplishments, creativity, and potential to become leaders in the scientific community. The size of the award is $50,000 for the two-year period.
Eligibility: Candidates are required to hold a PhD. (or equivalent) in chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, economics, neuroscience, computational and evolutionary molecular biology, ocean sciences, or in a related interdisciplinary field. Candidates must be members of the regular teaching faculty (i.e., tenure-track) of a degree-granting college or university in the U.S. or Canada; in addition, they must be no more than six years from completion of the most recent PhD. or equivalent as of the year of their nomination. The Foundation strongly encourages the nomination of qualified women and minority candidates.
